Day 17 #90DaysOfDevops
Aspiring Devops engineer eager to make an impact.
For day 17, I looked at File system and storage device management.
I learnt how Linux stores hard drive in the file system; sda - First SATA hard drive, sdb - Second SATA hard drive - Linux names them serially by incrementing the last letter in alphabetical order so the first first drive is sda, second drive is sdb and so on.
These drives can also be divided into partitions. They are labeled with a minor number after the drive designation. The first partition on sda would be sda1, the second will be sda2 and so on. To view the partitions on the Linux system the fdisk -l command is used. It lists all the partitions of the drives.
I also learnt how to mount and un-mount storage devices. As a general rule, internal hard drives are mounted at /mnt directory and external USB devices are mounted at /media directory.
To mount a new hard drive sdc1, the following would be entered mount /dev/sdc1 /mnt
To unmount; umount /dev/sdc1 mnt
To mount a flash drive sdd1; mount /dev/sdd1 /media. To umount; umount /dev/sdd1 /media.
Errors can be checked on the flash drive with the fsck command
This was a bit tricky to wrap my head around but I was able to run the exercises at the end of the chapter with little help. Continuous usage of the system will make it easier as time goes by.
Cheers to day 17 and cheers to many more days!
